The Samrat Ashok Subharti School of Buddhist Studies (SASSBS) was founded in 2018 under the visionary leadership of Dr. Shalya Raj, Chief Executive Officer of SVSU, and Dr. Heero Hito, Advisor and Founding Director. The school emerged as a pioneering academic institution dedicated to promoting Pāḷi, Buddhist Studies, and Indian Knowledge Systems at national and international levels.
SASSBS was launched with active participation from monastics and scholars representing 13 countries, marking a historical milestone in Buddhist education in Western Uttar Pradesh. The presence of a 115-year-old Bodhi Tree within the campus, a symbol of spiritual continuity, enhances its sacred academic atmosphere. Currently, M.A. and PhD students from Sri Lanka, Myanmar, Thailand, Nepal, Vietnam, Laos, the UK, the Netherlands, and other countries (both Theravāda & Mahāyāna) are studying and doing their research with us.
Offering programs such as a B.A. (Hons) in Buddhist Studies,an M.A. in Pāḷi, an M.A. in Buddhist Studies, a Ph.D. in Pāḷi, and a Ph.D. in Buddhist Studies, as well as Certificate Courses in Pāḷi Language, Vipassanā Meditation, and Brāhmī Script, SASSBS is dedicated to academic excellence, interfaith dialogue, and cultural preservation. It is also actively involved in national conferences, international collaborations, and community outreach initiatives.
The International Conference on “Pāl̥i as the Classical Language of India: Strengthening Asia’s Cultural Unity and Advancing India’s Role in Promoting Pāl̥i as a Global Heritage Language” celebrates Pāl̥i as an integral part of India’s rich intellectual and cultural heritage.Asone oftheClassical Languages of India, Pāl̥i not only preserves the timeless wisdom of the Buddhist canon but also acts as a bridge that connects India with the broader Asian world.
This conference invites scholars and learners from diverse fields to explore how the ancient teachings and ideas found in Pāl̥i can engage meaningfully with modern disciplines; such as psychology, law, medicine, ecology and social sciences. It reflects the spirit of the National Education Policy (NEP–2020) and the Indian Knowledge System (IKS), encouraging collaboration, cultural dialogue and shared learning.
Ultimately, the conference aims to highlight how Pāl̥i continues to inspire unity, peace and human development; offering timeless insights that remain relevant to today’s interconnected world.
